Better than milk and cookies
I've got to say that Santa has it wrong. A great bottle of wine- milk and cookies just can't compare. I'm thinking about a bottle of 2005 Merlot right now. It's unctuous and surprising, full of enticing rich berry. It can afford to be aged but it's so yummy right now, why wait ten years? Patience has never been a virtue of mine but I know that good things come to those who wait so I'll compromise. I'll buy two bottles. One to hold on to and one to have right now. And maybe if I'm feeling extra generous, I'll leave out a little for Santa.

Fireside Warmth
It's finally starting to feel like winter. Chilly and just a bit of rain. The sort of day you want to curl up next to your fireplace with a good book and a great glass of wine. For me, it would have to be a 2005 Lincourt Syrah- bold and rich with a lot of dark berry. And one of my favorite English murder mysteries. A perfect day. It's too bad I have to work.

Go crazy with pinot blanc
So, I'm starting to think that Pinot Blanc really is "the alternative" to Chardonnay. Admittedly, three days ago I knew zip about pinot blanc so this new burst of insight is just that- totally off the top of my head. We got the Pinot Blanc sent over this week for our wine club. Total wine geek that I am, I was stoked. A completely new wine for Lincourt. I submitted myself to a rigorous tasting and evaluation (seriously, yes, I had to drink the wine. what an unbearable job I have.) and it was just so cool. There was this totally unique aroma of slightly bruised bananas and maybe that doesn't sound great but it is. And just this bit of nutiness from the barrel aging. And I thought, it's like a Chardonnay but with a little more bite. And I think that bite is going to make it an even better partner for food and well, what is wine without it's natural mate? I'm never going to give up on Chardonnay- it's absolutely classic but I think I will make a little room in my "cellar" for Pinot Blanc. (I say "cellar" because it sounds so much better than case boxes stacked up against the wall. Someday.)
